Poole Pottery In 1873, a Builder's Merchant and Ironmonger going by the name of Jesse Carter bought a near derelict pottery in the town of Poole, Dorset and by 1880's the factory was well known for its tiling products, mosaic flooring and advertising panels. In the 1920's the company started a subsidiary to produce ornamental wares with vivid designs for which the company is now well known. Tableware soon followed and these products have now taken over from the original products. The most popular of the company's modern output is the "Living Glaze" ware which involves the application of different glazes which react with one another to achieve a unique result. Fine surface crackling is a natural result of this process and this effect continues to develop as each piece matures. This adds to the character and uniqueness of each piece. Paul Smith China carrys a good selection of these English handmade pieces which are still manufactured on the original site in Dorset. |
